3D-printed organs may soon be a reality. ‘Looking ahead, we’ll not need donor hearts’

Image
Last year, in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Arturo Bonilla carefully implanted an outer ear on a 20-year-old woman born without one. The ear on the woman’s right side, had been constructed in the size and shape of her left. For Bonilla, a pediatric microtia surgeon (a doctor who treats birth defects of the ear) for more than 25 years and a recognized expert in the field, such a procedure would normally be routine. But this case had a twist: For the first time, the ear he was implanting was the product of a 3D bioprinter using the woman’s own cartilage cells. The implant procedure, Bonilla told me, was “very uneventful.” It is a vast understatement, all things considered. From the realm of near-fiction to the germ of an idea to actual science, 3D bioprinting is advancing across all aspects of medical research—and, now, practice. The pace is slow, and target dates for some of the most ambitious 3D plans are decades off. But progress is real. “I think that in 10 years we will have organs ...

AI comes to the farm: New technology tackles acres of weeds quickly by using robotics and lasers

Image
Farmers interested in a fast, accurate way to rid their fields of weeds have a new option  in the AI space   Carbon Robotics is now shipping its LaserWeeder to farms around the United States; the machine uses the power of lasers and robotics to rid fields of weeds. Weeds are one of the most "tedious, time-consuming and challenging" elements of farming, Carbon Robotics told Fox Business via email.  The LaserWeeder can eliminate over 200,000 weeds per hour and offer up to 80% cost savings in weed control.  Carbon Robotics CEO and founder Paul Mikesell "knows farmers and has a lot of friends who are farmers," he said.  He decided to use his background in computer science, AI deep learning and business to create the LaserWeeder, he told Fox Business in a recent interview. "We grow a fair amount of vegitables  up here between Washington, California, Oregon and Idaho," said Mikesell, whose company is in Seattle. The "match that lit the fire" in d...

INDUS-X: India, US to expand strategic technology partnership and defence industrial cooperation

Image
With an aim to expand the strategic technology partnership and defence industrial cooperation between the two countries, India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) was launched by the defence departments of India and the US on Wednesday, informed an official press release. A factsheet was released for operationalising the “Defence Innovation Bridge” under the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) at the event, according to the official release by the Ministry of Defence. iCET was announced by US President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 for cooperation on critical and emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, semiconductors and quantum computing. The event also saw a first-of-its-kind joint showcasing innovative technologies by Indian and US start-ups. 15 Indian start-ups and 10 US start-ups, from multiple domains of maritime, AI, autonomous systems and space showcased their technologies to Indian and US stakeholders.

Indian-origin teen deliberately crashes truck into a White House barrier; says he wanted to kill President Biden.

Image
A 19-year-old Indian-origin teen accused of deliberately crashing a rented U-Haul truck into a White House  barrier told authorities that he wanted to get inside the mansion to "seize power" and "kill" US President Joe Biden,  according to media reports. US Park Police arrested Sai Varshith Kandula  after he crashed the truck into the security barriers on the north side of Lafayette Park shortly before 10 pm on Monday, sending multiple pedestrians running from the scene, The Washington Times reported. The crash was a good distance from the White House gates, but the incident prompted road and sidewalk closures, and the nearby Hay-Adams hotel  had to be evacuated. No one was injured in the crash. Kandula, of Chesterfield, Missouri, rented the truck on Monday night immediately after flying from St Louis to Dulles International Airport on a one-way ticket, a Secret Service agent said in a statement of facts filed in federal district court in Washington DC, NBC Ne...

As Cyclone Mocha Approaches, Half-A-Million People Evacuated In Bangladesh.

Image
"Cyclone 'Mocha' is coming. We have kept the cyclone centres and taken all types of preparations to tackle it," Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said. Dhaka/Coxs Bazar:  Authorities in Bangladesh on Saturday launched a massive evacuation campaign to relocate close to half a million people along the southeastern coastlines as a "very dangerous" tropical cyclone is expected to make landfall in the country, threatening the Rohingya refugee camp, the world's largest. Cyclone Mocha, one of the most powerful cyclones seen in Bangladesh in nearly two decades, is predicted to barrel towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar border on Sunday. "Cyclone 'Mocha' is coming. We have kept the cyclone centres and taken all types of preparations to tackle it," Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said. The evacuation drive was taken as the maritime port of Cox's Bazar has been advised to hoist danger signal no 10 as Cyclone Mocha is likely to intensify further and move ...

SpaceX Starship explosion spread particulate matter for miles.

Image
SpaceX launched the largest rocket ever built for  the first time on thursday   from its Boca Chica, Texas, spaceport. The Starship spacecraft, designed to fly people on a Mars mission someday, lifted off the launch pad then blew up in mid-flight, with no crew on board. Now, residents and researchers are scrambling to assess the impact of the explosion on local communities, their health, habitat and wildlife including endangered species. Of primary concern is the large amount of sand- and ash-like particulate matter and heavier debris kicked up by the launch. The particulate emissions spread far beyond the expected debris field. As a result of the explosion, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded the company's Starship Super Heavy launch program pending results of a "mishap investigation," part of standard practice, according to an email from the agency sent to CNBC after the launch. No injuries or public property damage had yet been reported to the agency a...

China to test out 3D printing technology on moon to build habitats.

Image
China  will explore using 3D printing technology to construct buildings on the moon, the official China Daily reported on Monday, as Beijing solidifies plans for long-term lunar habitation. In 2020 Chinese lunar mission, the Chang' e 5, named after the mythical Chinese goddess of the moon, an uncrewed probe took back to Earth China's first lunar soil samples. China, which made its first lunar landing in 2013, plans to land an astronaut on the moon by 2030. Between now and then, China will launch the Chang'e 6, 7 and 8 missions, with the latter tasked to look for reusable resources on the moon for long-term human habitation. The Chang'e 8 probe will conduct on-site investigations of the environment and mineral composition, and also determine whether technologies such as 3D printing can be deployed on the lunar surface, China Daily reported, quoting Wu Weiren, a scientist at the China National Space Administration.  "If we wish to stay on the moon for a long time, ...

Secrets of Area 51

Image
Area 51 is a highly secretive United States Air Force facility located in the Nevada desert. It has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories and is rumored to be the site of top-secret government projects, including those related to extraterrestrial life. Although the U.S. government has acknowledged the existence of Area 51, it has never publicly disclosed the details of the facility's activities. One of the most well-known theories about Area 51 is that it is a site for the storage and study of crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft. This theory gained popularity in the 1980s, after a man named Bob Lazar claimed to have worked on alien technology at the site. He claimed that the government was in possession of nine flying saucers, and that he had personally worked on one of them. However, there has been no solid evidence to support this claim, and the U.S. government has consistently denied any involvement with extraterrestrial life. Another theory about Area 51 is that it...
